Lucasfilm has announced that a new Star Wars trilogy is being created by The Last Jedi director, Rian Johnson. The announcement came Thursday that Johnson will write and direct the trilogy with longtime collaborator Ram Bergman (Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Looper) set to produce.
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy went on to say “We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi. He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”
The new trilogy will be separate from the episodic Skywalker saga as Johnson will introduce new characters “from the corner of the galaxy that “Star Wars lore has never before explored”. (Via Starwars.com)
In a joint statement by Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman, the two shared their experience working with Disney on The Last Jedi:
“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi. Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”
While there’s no release date at the moment of when the first of the Johnson trilogy will hit theaters, The Last Jedi will hit theaters December 15.
